Duties

Help

Interns will work on various assignments within one of GAO's Administrative Professional and Support Staff (APSS) offices:


Chief Administrative Office (CAO) Insider Threat: Intern will learn how to conduct risk assessments in order to triage potential insider threats. Intern will assist the GAO Insider Threat Program in identifying agency-wide vulnerabilities that could be exploited by insider threats, and developing mitigation strategies. Intern will collect and analyze data, develop data-based findings and conclusions.


Continuous Process Improvement (CPI): Support agency-wide process improvement and change management projects including documenting work processes, gathering and analyzing data, facilitating and documenting focus groups, gathering business requirements for information technology systems and assisting with implementation, implementing project management, and creating written communications.


Congressional Relations (CR): Fosters and maintains liaisons with congressional committees, Members of Congress, and congressional staff.


Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB): Interns will perform research and technical activities in support of the Board and its staff. Duties will include reviewing and analyzing federal financial report disclosures and/or supporting the development of implementation guidance on leases, land, and public-private partnerships. Experience with automation tools used for data gathering and analysis is a plus.


Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO): Responsible for maintaining, organizing, interpreting, and reviewing accounting documents and data for record management purposes; analyzing and reviewing data to ensure consistency; conducting analysis of GAO/FMBO’s best practices.

Human Capital Office (HCO): Perform a full-range of analytical and technical work assignments to support GAO’s human resources functions such as researching human capital trends and leading practices, processing personnel and payroll actions, developing recruitment strategies and communications materials, and enhancing organizational diversity and inclusion program.


Information Systems and Technology Services (ISTS), Budget, Acquisition, and Contracts Group (BACG): Assist in performing budget and procurement formulation and administration duties using Financial and MS office systems.


Information Management and Technology Services (ISTS), Publishing and Dissemination Group (PDG): Various publishing support activities including operations, quality assurance, print procurement, publishing technical support, and accessibility. Knowledge of publishing, Adobe, and MS Office.


Infrastructure Operations (IO): Perform analytical studies focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various business operations, processes, and programs in the subject areas of facility management, security and emergency management, and records management.

Learning Center (LC): Provide course development assistance to the agency’s learning & talent development unit, including instructional systems design (ISD) and other methods. This includes the analysis, development and implementation of classroom, webinar, and eLearning courseware.


Office of the General Counsel (OGC) Assist management with a variety of administrative support functions, including receptionist duties when needed, filing, copying, scheduling, and correspondence; assist managers with updating attorney recruiting materials utilizing automated systems; support attorneys on projects, including researching and retrieving GAO and OGC records and historical documents; provide overall administrative support to attorneys and paralegals; assist paralegals with maintaining data systems.


Opportunity and Inclusiveness (OI): Intern will work with O&I staff on projects related to diversity and inclusiveness issues and collect and analyze workforce data for trends in order to promote and maintain a work environment that is fair, unbiased, and inclusive. In addition, interns will provide assistance to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of internal operations for O&I administrative functions, including information technology and infrastructure operations.


Office of the Inspector General (OIG) - The intern will report to an OIG manager and will assist management in administrative support functions, support staff on projects, assist with maintaining data systems, and help develop tools and methods for standardizing procedures.


Public Affairs (PA): Assist with the product line steering committee and working groups; reaching new communications platforms and new features of existing communications platforms.

Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL): Intern will help develop tools and methods to advance the strategic planning process, promote dialogue within accountability community, improve event coordination and planning tools, and support the Managing Director’s long-term agenda.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the start of the internship.

To qualify for the GS-4 level, you must be enrolled in a Bachelor's degree seeking program, and meet one of the following criteria:

1. You must have completed 60 semester hours or 90 quarter credits of Bachelor's level education; or

2. You must possess an Associate's degree.



NOTE: You must be a current student enrolled in an undergraduate program seeking a degree from an accredited educational institution on a full or half-time basis. See the Qualifications section of this announcement for more details on who may apply and how to qualify for a Fall 2020 GAO internship. If at any point during the internship (and for any reason) your status as a student changes to that of a non-student, your internship will be terminated.

The anticipated start dates are pay periods beginning August 30, 2020 thru October 11, 2020

Appointments for student intern positions are non-permanent and generally last from 10 to 16 weeks. Student interns may have an opportunity for a permanent or term position based on a successful intern experience (completion of a minimum of 400 hours of work, not to exceed a total of 640 hours) and successful completion of degree requirements. The ability to convert to a permanent or term appointment with a minimum 400 hours of work experience is contingent upon budgetary conditions and staffing needs at the time of eligibility. The pay for these intern positions are at the grade 4 step 1.
