Duties

Help

As a Geologist within the Geosciences & Environmental Change Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Uses expert knowledge in geology to integrate existing literature, available geologic mapping, and remotely sensed data to synthesize existing maps with un-reconciled boundaries and produce original geologic mapping of surficial geology / Quaternary sedimentary deposits.
  • Uses GIS software including ArcGIS to conduct geologic mapping and geodatabase attribution and management in a collaborative, enterprise GIS environment
  • Manages geospatial datasets of noteworthy geologic deposits and geomorphic features to advance project research goals and facilitate resource assessments.
  • Collects physical samples for specialized laboratory chemical analyses (e.g., geochronology or geochemical analyses).
  • Uses graphics editing and data manipulation software to produce publication quality figures and/or geospatial analyses.

Physical Demands

The work required will be performed primarily in the office but includes occasional fieldwork. Field sample/data collection will occur under a variety of conditions that may require considerable walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting. Field site access may require hiking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces and climbing/descending steep slopes. Collection of soil and rock samples requires strength, dexterity, and agility. Strength is required to lift and carry weights of up to 30 pounds. Office work requires dexterity to accurately and effectively digitize large amounts of geologic map data.

Work Environment

The work is usually performed in an office, but occasional travel of up to a week per month is required for fieldwork and to attend meetings. Fieldwork may occur year-round, requiring work in a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow, and cold or hot weather. Fieldwork will occasionally require camping overnight in backcountry conditions and will require special safety precautions.
