Duties

Help

This position serves as a Government Information Technician within the Division of Support Services branch. The incumbent provides the principal administrative support for the FOIA team, Business Manager, and the Deputy of Support Services. Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Receives and logs in all new requests;
  • Analyzes requests to determine if they are in compliance with agency regulations; reviews and analyzes records to determine whether exemptions apply and marks exemptions;
  • Researches and compiles requested records from office files;
  • Redacts any protected information prior to public release; ensures redactions made are neat, accurate, and correctly labeled with appropriate exemption numbers;
  • Coordinates with managers, supervisors and employees;
  • Establishes and maintains case files;
  • Drafts correspondence to the requestor;
  • Tracks all FOIA requests and responds to data calls as needed; and
  • Updates FOIA log information and prepares end of year report on FOIA requests received and processed.

Physical demands: The work is primarily sedentary. Incumbent is required to handle, box and mail documents.

Work environment: The work is performed in an office setting. Occasional travel may be required.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.  Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.64. Time-in-Grade requirements for the  GS-07 level is 52 weeks at the GS-06 level.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-06 grade level.  

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify at the GS-07 level:Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Government Information Technician. Specialized experience includes establishing and maintaining office files and records; researching information for customers either online or in an office filing system; reviewing forms and documents for accuracy; and operating computerized programs and/or databases to enter, modify, and retrieve information.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

KSA 1: Knowledge of FOIA regulations, policies, and precedents in order to search and locate relevant FOIA materials, regulations, policies, case law, guidance and instructions and to determine relevance and applicability of straightforward requests.

KSA 2: Knowledge of processes and functions of records management, FOIA, confidential records management, and Privacy Act in order to assist with FOIA reviews.

KSA 3: Ability to use a variety of office automation software, computer applications and navigate the internet to input and retrieve information and complete daily tasks

KSA 4: Ability to communicate effectively, skillfully, and tactfully with internal and external customers from various backgrounds and experiences to ensure information provided is accurate, current, logical, and clear.
