Duties

Help

As a Research Biologist (Computational), your duties may include the following:

  • Conduct research in computational biology and bioinformatics including areas such as DNA microarray analysis, proteomics, immunoinformatics, systems biology, DNA sequence analysis, and structural biology.
  • Provide guidance and training in computational systems for the research staff and ensure that the branch computational services are current and appropriate to serve the research needs.
  • Collaborate with statistical and biological scientists to develop new computational methodology to clarify fundamental processes of cancer biology and to develop statistical models in support of the areas of research.
  • Develop computer simulations and computer representations of statistical and biological models.
  • Serve as an official representative of the NCI on special projects with national and international scientific organizations, such as the National Academy of Sciences, International Association of Research for Research on Cancer, and the World Health Organization.
  • Develop methods of visualization of high dimensional data and dynamic systems.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: in order to qualify for a Research Biologist (Computational), GS-401, you must meet one of the following:
A. Have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
B. Have a combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, in order to qualify for a Research Biologist (Computational) at the GS-14 level.
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Independently conducting research in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology, molecular biology, genetics, and /or chemistry; using biomedical data management systems and scientific software applications to manipulate and analyze large data sets of information; developing innovative computational methods for genomics applications; preparing reports that include analytical interpretations and novel approaches to resolving problems or issues; and leading others in conducting research or research analyses.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
