Summary

The Director, Science Directorate (SD) at NASA's Langley Research Center reports to the Center Director. Duties

Help
  • Leads a Directorate of approximately 105 civil servants and over 200 on-site contractors including scientists, engineers, data science specialists, project managers, and administrative professionals that support the NASA Science mission.
  • Serves as principal science liaison for Langley Research Center (LaRC) with the NASA Science Mission Directorate, other NASA Field Centers, other Government research laboratories, academia, and private industry.
  • Ensures effective execution of all projects within the LaRC science portfolio, including basic research, applied science, airborne science campaigns, scientific instrument development, and flight project development.
  • Maintains and evolves the LaRC science portfolio through the formulation, proposing, and advocacy of innovative research.
  • Supports the LaRC Center Director as a member of Langley's Center Leadership Council (CLC) and works closely with other CLC members to ensure the science portfolio is integrated within the overall Center strategy and operating plan.

Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience, normally with several years at the GS-15 level or equivalent, which demonstrates clearly the ability to manage people and resources. Candidates must also demonstrate qualifications in the managerial and technical areas noted below. TECHNICAL QUALIFICAITONS:
1. Demonstrated experience in managing the programmatic and technical execution of a diverse portfolio of complex projects ranging from basic research to scientific space flight hardware development projects within the framework of financial, schedule, performance, and policy constraints.
2. Demonstrated ability in leading, directing, and managing a research organization, including the development and implementation of a vision for an organization's science objectives.

Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.
