This position may be filled as a Peer Support Apprentice (GS-5) or a Peer Specialist (GS-6, 7, 8, or 9) in the Mental Health Service Line for the HUD VASH program at the northern catchment area in the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center.
The primary functions of this position is to perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks by assisting others diagnosed with mental illness to achieve their personal recovery goals based on the specialist's own recovery experience.

The Peer Support Apprentice will attain the knowledge, skills and abilities to prepare the individual for certification and to be able to perform the full range of assignments found at the Peer Specialist position.
The GS-05 Apprentice functions as a role model exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serves as a consumer advocate; provides consumer information and peer support for veterans in outpatient and inpatient settings to develop the ability to assist others in treatment based on the principles of recovery and resiliency. Peer Support Apprentices serve in a developmental capacity and do not receive the full range of assignments performed in Peer Specialist position. Those veterans who are not yet certified Peer Specialist as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(b)(13)(B), but who meet the basic requirements in 38 U.S.C. 7402(b)(13)(A), may receive consideration under a hiring authority for which they have eligibility for a time-limited appointment as Peer Support Apprentice, GS-102-5. Upon becoming certified and meeting applicable qualification and eligibility requirements, Peer Support Apprentices should then receive consideration for selection for a non-time-limited appointment as a Peer Specialist.
The Peer Specialist assists professional personnel in rehabilitation treatment programs for Veterans by performing a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks.
The GS-06, 07 or GS-08 Peer Specialist will serve in a developmental capacity to provide the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the full range of routine assignments found at the full-performance level. The key functions of the GS-09 Full Performance level duties include, but are not limited to:

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. The full performance level for this position is a GS-9. Preference consideration will be given to certified candidates (Peer Specialist) over uncertified candidates (Peer Support Apprentice).
