Duties

Help

The incumbent performs a wide variety of assignments designed to enhance the public’s understanding of BLM programs, to assess public reaction to BLM activities, and to evaluate the effectiveness of communication materials and programs. Work may involve responding to media questions, developing informational materials, and developing portions of comprehensive communications plans. The incumbent is responsible for timely dissemination of accurate and balanced information about BLM programs, activities, and responsibilities to diverse audiences, utilizing both traditional communication channels as well as digital and new media platforms. Assignments will be designed to prepare the incumbent for the GS-12 level.

Physical Demands: Work is generally sedentary with some walking and driving.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an office setting with some travel to field sites or other offices. Attendance at meetings at night or on weekends is sometimes required.

Applicants may qualify for this position based on experience, Graduate level education, or a combination of experience and education. Education must be directly related to the work of the position.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirements: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

To qualify at the GS-11 level applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the federal service; OR 3 full years of graduate level education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or LL.M., if related; OR a combination of the education and experience described above. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience in advising management on policy formulation and the potential public reaction to proposed policy, where identifying communication needs and developing information materials is required. Experience using the range of communication platforms. Accurately identifying internal and external target audiences to share information and displaying exemplary writing skills in AP style. Experience must be in or related to public lands, natural resource management programs, and multiple use.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
