Duties

Help

The Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic:

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and modifies single and multiple power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment, hot air furnaces, and similar equipment systems.
  • Repairs/replaces flushometers, clears drain stoppages, rebuilds fixtures, repairs leaks and any other jobs assigned.
  • Performs major repairs, alteration, rebuild, and installation of natural gas and oil-fired heating units, high and low pressure hot water and steam generating boilers and hot air furnaces.
  • Reads and interprets building plans and blueprints, as well as skill in accepted trade methods and techniques.
  • Plans and lays out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. 

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who has experience as a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic at the Journeyman level performing installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and modifying single and multiple power boilers , and hot air furnaces. The incumbent can also repairs/replaces flushometes, clears drain stoppages, rebuilds fixtures, rand repairs leaks.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: You may be required to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing of vertical ladders (up to 50 feet), and crouching. You may work on top of, under, or in tight compartments in cramped or awkward positions. You may perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. You must be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds without assistance, and exerting of similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies and equipment is required. Heavier items must frequently be lifted or moved with the assistance of other workers, or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Also required to work from skiffs, small craft and
    floating barges.
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work will be performed both indoors and outside. You will be
    subject to prevailing weather conditions, extreme temperature, wet, and/or icy conditions when working outside. You will be subject to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes when working either inside or outside.
    You will work in spaces containing installed asbestos; and will be subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock and other injuries resulting from falls or hazards of the
    occupation when making repairs, or when positioning and/or moving equipment. You must follow prescribed safety practices, and use
    appropriate safety equipment (e.g., protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, protective clothing, etc.), which is provided. Some safety items may be uncomfortable to wear, or may be required to be worn for prolonged periods of time. In summary, the working environment is typical of, and includes all the hazards of, a shipboard, shipyard, and/or marine environment, including working in adverse climatic conditions and on slippery decks. May be required to work outside of normal hours in response to emergent conditions within the fleet or aboard out ported ships.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the  training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for Wage Grade 10, your application will also  be rated on the following job elements:

  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Knowledge of Assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Materials.
  • Ability to Troubleshoot.
