The incumbent will be part of the Pathways Internship Program as a Student Trainee (Biological Sciences) with the USDA's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is a multi-faceted Programs, in Beltsville, MD. This program is designed to provide students enrolled in a variety of educational institutions from high school to graduate level with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school.

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Works with animal pathogens and Agricultural Select Agents in support of animal health programs.
  • Works in preparation and response for nationwide animal or plant health emergencies, regulation of plant and animal imports and exports.
  • Conducts duties to promote the regulation of genetically modified organics and facilitates the safe and innovative use of biotechnology.

  • The student is expected to work part-time when classes are in session (16 to 32 hours per week) and full-time during breaks.
  • Work must be performed between between Monday-Friday, 6:00 am through 6:00 pm. The work schedule will be determined/finalized by supervisor upon appointment.
  • This is a Temporary Appointment not to exceed 6 months. This Pathways Internship may confer noncompetitive conversion to a Term or career/career conditional position in the Federal sector.

  • Telework will only be authorized until COVID 19 restrictions are lifted, otherwise the expectation will be to report to the physical office location.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including education, as defined below.

ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.

Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.

Preferred fields of study: Agricultural Science, Plant Pathology, Biology, or a closely related field.

EDUCATION:
GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) of post-high school study or an associate's degree.

TRANSCRIPTS are required:

  • You are qualifying for the position based on education.
  • This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university

Additional information

The anticipated hours are 16 to 32 hours per week.

This is a temporary Pathways Internship Program appointment not-to-exceed six months and may be extended based on program needs and if the student meets program requirements.

Housing and travel expenses WILL NOT be paid.

This Internship confers eligibility for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position in the competitive service contingent upon meeting all applicable Internship Program requirements and the needs of the agency. You will be considered for conversion to a permanent or term position upon the successful completion of your Internship. However, please note that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will opt for conversion. The target position for this internship is a Biological Science Technician, GS-404-5/6/7 position or a Plant Protection and Quarantine Officer, GS-401-5/7/9/11 position.

If selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entrance on duty. Proof of enrollment or acceptance for the upcoming academic term or semester will also be required unless graduating in the current semester.A Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if you are selected for a position. The agreement must be signed by all applicable parties prior to entrance on duty.Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.
