Duties

Help
  • Assist in clarifying and implementing writing and editing requirements within DCIS; help ensure all products meet requirements; assist the management of the DoD Style Tips for all reports manual updating for the benefit of all OIG components.
  • Provide as assigned, editorial assistance to other DoD OIG components providing editorial guidance, assistance, and training.
  • Maintain awareness of external requirements in areas of responsibility and recommends methods for incorporating new initiatives into current guidance, policies, and procedures.
  • Duties include:
  • Review all assigned reports and other written materials for consistency of mechanics and expression, logical organization and development, and general readability.
  • Adjust as required, report tone and style to be suitable for the intended audience.
  • Recommend new presentation formats to ensure that material is presented clearly.
  • Ensure complete and cogent presentation of the subject.
  • Rewrite significant portions of reports to ensure appropriate final presentation as needed.
  • Recommend and discuss with the author(s) editorial changes designed to enhance the clarity of the information, grammatical accuracy, and consistency of the data.
  • Ensure clarity and correctness of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Advise clients of any changes in style or format requirements and disseminates current policy.
  • Provide recommendations to whether reports are written in a way in which findings support recommendations, support overall report conclusions, and that conclusion correspond to objectives.
  • Verify the accuracy of calculations, references, footnotes, acronyms, etc.
  • Develop and provide training to advice writers on how to recognize and correct common errors and weaknesses in writing, collect examples of current problems observed, identify trends, and summarize information for dissemination to appropriate levels.

  • Position has been designated as Noncritical Sensitive. Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Incumbent is required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and is subject to random drug testing for the duration of service with DoD OIG.
  • Current DoD civilian employees are not required to submit to drug testing if moving from one Testing Designated Position (TDP) to another with no break in service, unless deemed appropriate on a case-by-case basis.
  • If you have not previously completed a probationary period with the Federal government in a similar position, you will be required to serve a two-year probationary period.

  • Position(s) may be filled by displaced Department of Defense (DoD) employees through the Priority Placement Program.

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Minimum Qualification requirements as noted: You must meet the specialized experience described below.

Specialized Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-12 if outside the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as writing, reviewing, and editing materials such as reports, regulations, articles, newsletters, magazines, news releases, training materials, brochures, interpretive handbooks, pamphlets, guidebooks, scholarly works, reference works, speeches or scripts to ensure clarity, spelling, grammar and punctuation; experience developing, analyzing and gathering information on specific topics and presenting material in a way that is appropriate and understandable to the intended audience; experience presenting documentation by following specific styles and formats (such as MLA, APA, etc.); and experience analyzing the impact of new, revised, and proposed legislation, Executive Orders and/or policy changes for application to potential speeches and written reports.
