Duties

Help
  • You will serve as the collection manager for the museum's artifacts, responsible for physical maintenance, preservation, storage, and inventory of the collection.
  • You will locate sources of artifacts and recommend acquisition of items via NHHC transfer, donation process or purchase.
  • You will enter data into the asset database management system, adhering to overall collection policies.
  • You will assist the Curator in the implementation of registrar and curatorial functions.
  • You will answer technical and general inquires on historical properties in the collection, and establish the historical validity, identification, and provenance of artifacts.
  • You will assist the Curator in initiating, planning, and developing ideas and storylines for exhibits.
  • You will perform educational duties for the Naval and civilian community to include delivering lectures, preparing articles, and giving formal tours.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate the following:

GS-9: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Museum Curator performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Managing a museum's collection through physical maintenance, preservation, storage, and inventory of artifacts; 2) Inputting, retrieving, and reporting data utilizing an automated collections management database following standardized nomenclature and catalog format; 3) Performing research of documentary materials (e.g. accession records, technical publications, and books) to establish the historical validity, identification, and provenance of collection properties; 4) Planning and developing ideas and storylines for exhibits aligned with a museum's mission; and 5) Delivering lectures and formal presentations to individuals, groups and organizations.

GS-7: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Museum Curator performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Assisting in the management of a museum's collection through physical maintenance, preservation, storage, and inventory of artifacts; 2) Inputting data into an automated collections management database following standardized nomenclature and catalog format; 3) Collaborating with museum colleagues to select artifacts that best support storylines for exhibits; and 4) Answering technical and general inquiries from the public about items in a museum collection.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field such as history, museology, or art history. https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/working-in-government/unique-hiring-paths/students/federal-occupations-by-college-major/ ;OR, you must have a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field plus appropriate experience or additional education; OR, you must have four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4-year course of study in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.


The following can be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualification requirements of this position:

GS-09: You must have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.
