    Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

    The Physician will be assigned to interested facilities throughout VHA in support of COVID-19 operations and may be temporarily appointed (not-to-exceed 120 days) on an intermittent, part-time or full-time schedule in support of the VA facilities across the Nation.

    1. Anesthesia Service defines the scope of practice of anesthesiology to include but not limited to the administrative involvement in hospitals, medical schools, and outpatient facilities necessary for implementation of these responsibilities.
      1. Conduct of research and collaboration in research efforts at the clinical and basic science level in order to proactively identify gaps in evidence and practice, then measure the impact of filling these gaps and linking evidence to practice. Relevant research findings and quality improvement results can then be systematically fed back to providers and patients, as appropriate.
      2. Supervision, teaching, and evaluation of performance of both medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory, and critical care.
      3. Evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy in all its forms.
      4. Clinical management and teaching of cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.
      5. Diagnosis and treatment of painful syndromes.
      6. Monitoring and restoration of homeostasis during the perioperative period, as well as homeostasis in the critically ill, injured, or otherwise seriously ill patient.
      7. Provision of insensibility to pain during surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures and the management of patients so affected.
      8. Assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia.
      9. Involvement in quality improvement efforts.
    The physician provides direct patient care on a rotational basis and clinical oversight in:
    • Operating room anesthesia care, including supervision of residents and CRNAs
    • Non-OR anesthesia care (e.g. GI clinic, cardiology, radiology, emergency department)
    • Chronic pain management
    • Perioperative physician responsibilities, including preoperative evaluation, risk assessment, preparation for surgery and management of postoperative pain
    • Clinical and health services research
    • Education and mentoring of medical students, residents, fellows, student nurse anesthesia and physician assistant students and other health care professional trainees
    • Night/weekend call responsibilities
