Duties

Help

The incumbent will sustain and grow the NIST Standard Reference Material (SRM) program for metals and alloys, geological ores and other materials that underpin US industrial manufacturing, and cements.  The major duties involve performing X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses of SRM and other materials using wavelength-dispersive instruments (not microscope-based); preparing reports of analysis; participating in teams for the development of SRMs; and representing NIST on technical committees of ASTM International.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

  1. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

IN ADDITION:

ZP-III

To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (or ZP-II at NIST).  Specialized experience is defined as experience in the practice of chemical analysis using XRF (not microscope-based), including sample preparation and operation of instrumentation.

OR

Master’s or equivalent graduate degree

ZP-IV

To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least to the GS-12 level (or ZP-III at NIST).  Specialized experience is defined as experience in the practice of chemical analysis using XRF (not microscope-based), including sample preparation and operation of instrumentation; and in the development of certified reference materials.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
