Duties

Help
  • Advises the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Associate Administrator and senior management on scientific data and computing.
  • Serves as an advocate within SMD for scientific data and computing innovation and new paradigms enabled by emerging technologies.
  • Evaluates the structure and content of SMD's scientific data and computing capabilities and makes recommendations for improvements and investments in targeted capabilities; manages grant programs to further these goals.
  • Implements scientific data and computing policies and verifies compliance across all elements of SMD's portfolio.
  • Cultivates cross-divisional collaboration and develops SMD's data and computing community through workshops, studies, training, etc.
  • Provides technical, programmatic, and budgetary guidance in the execution of new scientific data and computing activities of SMD.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirements you must meet all aspects of specialized experience which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-15:

You must have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal service providing technical advice and applying advanced computing capabilities (e.g. cloud computing, machine learning, artificial intelligence) to enable scientific discovery; setting and implementing new data management policies; advising on and managing grant programs.

Education

In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, Other fields of science.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

All degree(s) must have been awarded from colleges or universities that are accredited by recognized accrediting organizations.
