Summary

This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Services (ARS), Soil and Water Management Unit in St. Paul, MN

The primary purpose of the position is to conduct laboratory experiments, field plot studies, and collection of samples in watersheds to determine the occurrence, fate and transport of agriculturally-important pollutants and to evaluate the effectiveness of management practices and mitigation procedures.

Duties

Help
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies water, soil, plant, or agricultural material samples and supporting records for research projects evaluating environmental contaminants.
  • Searches scientific literature for established methods to meet assignment objectives in the laboratory or field and adapts, modifies or develops new methods to ensure that goals of the environmental contaminants research projects are achieved.
  • Initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties with equipment and discrepancies with data in the experimental process and recommends resolution to supervisor.
  • Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized analytical and extraction equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Performs analyses using sophisticated chromatographic and spectroscopic instruments especially, liquid chromatography (LC) or gas chromatography (GC) using mass spectrometry detection (MSMS); ultraviolet spectroscopy; and flame ionization detector.
  • Enters data into spreadsheets, performs further calculations, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

At the GS-08:
Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project related to water, soil, or plants; collecting or evaluating samples related to water, soil, or plants; recording or analyzing scientific data; and operating and maintaining scientific equipment.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or Civil Engineering.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

At the GS-09:

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is conducting an experiment or research project related to water, soil, or plants; collecting or evaluating samples related to water, soil, or plants; operating and maintaining research equipment; recording and analyzing scientific data; and preparing scientific information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or Civil Engineering.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
