This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. The incumbent will be assigned to the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences/Recreation & Creative Arts Therapy Section this student will be able to put to use the knowledge gained through recreation/music therapy studies by providing recreation and or therapy services to the patients admitted to the Miami VA Healthcare System. He/she will learn from recreation and/or creative arts therapists how to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a large variety of treatment modalities which meet the assessed needs of the patients on psychiatric and residential treatment units, who are acutely and chronically ill with a wide variety of physical and mental illnesses and conditions.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluates the history, interest, aptitudes, and skills of patient/resident by interviews, inventories, test and measurements to diminish emotional stress, provide a sense of achievement, channel energies and interests Into acceptable forms of behavior, aid physical and mental rehabilitation, and promote successful community life.
  • Coordinates a range of activities with volunteer or community groups development of appropriate activities for treatment.
  • Applies standardized assessment as approved by the clinical supervisor in ·answer to a written or oral prescription from the unit staff (physician, nurse, social worker)
  • Chooses from established programs with the assistance of the clinical supervisor the program that most appropriately meets the extended needs of the client he/she is charged with treating.
  • Maintains daily records of patient attendance and participation in recreation/music therapy activities and will maintain other needed information for patient/resident/service report.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. The grade progression for this position is GS-5.

Work Schedule: 20 hours per week, afternoon/evenings, holidays may be required. Saturday and/or Sunday (at least one weekend day required. Flexible schedule (Student's school/class schedule taking in to consideration)

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/25/2020.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:

Specialized Experience:

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-3 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Assists with activities with a large group of patients which have a broad range of diagnoses; assists in the determination of benefits being derived by the patients from the treatment and indicates when changes in treatment or termination of treatment are recommended or necessary; planning, implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of a large variety of treatment modalities which meet the assessed needs of the patients with the help of a recreation therapist; providing treatment to patients who are acutely and chronically ill with a wide variety of physical and mental illnesses and conditions. Knowledge of concepts, principles and practices of recreation/music therapy;

Education:

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completion of two (2) full academic years above high school study or an Associate's degree.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs or over); heavy carrying (45 lbs or over); straight pulling (4 hours) pulling hand over hand (4 hours); Pushing (4 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (4 hours); standing (4 hours); repeated bending (4 hours); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish, shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); outside and inside; solvents (degreasing agents); grease and oils; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; working closely with others; working alone.

Additional information

You are excluded from health benefits coverage if you are expected to work less than 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
