Summary

VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) in Reno, NV is seeking a full-time board certified/board eligible anesthesiologist to join our surgical staff to provide general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care for general, vascular, thoracic, orthopedic, GU, ENT, ophthalmology, and podiatric surgery. Also included is anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab and interventional radiology.

Help

The staff Anesthesiologist is accountable to Chief, Anesthesiology, to provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the medical center in compliance with VA and VHA Directives and The Joint Commission accreditation standards.

The staff Anesthesiologist may be responsible for:
* Assessment of, consultation for, and preparation of patients for anesthesia including pre-operative patient exam and assessment.
* Provision of insensibility to pain during surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures and the management of patients so affected.
* Monitoring and restoration of homeostasis during the perioperative period, as well as homeostasis in the critically ill, injured, or otherwise seriously ill patient.
* Diagnosis and treatment of painful syndromes.
* Clinical management and teaching of cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation.
* Evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy in all its forms.
* Supervision, teaching, and evaluation of performance of both medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory, and critical care.
* Conduct of research and collaboration in research efforts at the clinical and basic science level in order to proactively identify gaps in evidence and practice, then measure the impact of filling these gaps and linking evidence to practice. Relevant research findings and quality improvement results can then be systematically fed back to providers and patients, as appropriate.
* Provides anesthesia-related direct patient care in all functional areas of the OR, PACU, ICU, ward, and out of OR procedural settings as needed.
* Administrative involvement in hospitals, medical schools, and outpatient facilities necessary for implementation of these responsibilities.
* Involvement in quality improvement efforts.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, Holidays and On-call coverage is required

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Anesthesia.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: In the process of providing patient care, the work involves regular and recurring periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting, reaching and carrying. Manual dexterity is required to operate medical equipment and perform activities such as surgery, treatments and computerized medical record documentation.

Education

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
