  • Developing and testing culture systems, equipment, and cultural practices to improve warmwater aquaculture production efficiency on commercial farms.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirement:

A. Degree; with major study in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours in biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included:

  • At least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and parasitology; and

  • At least 6 semester hours of training applicable to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or fresh water ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology; and

  • At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics.
OR

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-12:
Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience in water quality management and production system engineering related to fish aquaculture; experience with biology and culture of freshwater fish; experience planning and conducting research, analyzing data and experience with customers and stakeholders, scientists from academia and other agencies, and industry partners in maintaining on-going professional relationships; and experience reporting research results in peer reviewed scientific journals and making presentations at scientific and stakeholder meetings, as it relates to water quality management and production system engineering in fish aquaculture.

OR
Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

OR

Combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.

At the GS-13:
Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conceiving and formulating research ideas in water quality management and production systems engineering related to fish aquaculture; experience conduction research in the biology and culture of freshwater fish; experience planning and conducting research, analyzing data and experience with customers and stakeholders, scientists from academia and other agencies, and industry partners in maintaining on-going professional relationships; and demonstrated record of peer reviewed journal publications reporting research results in scientific journals and making presentations at scientific and stakeholder meetings, as it relates to water quality management and production system engineering in fish aquaculture.

At the GS-14:
Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience developing and applying new techniques and original methods to research in water quality management and production system engineering related to fish aquaculture; isolating and defining critical problem features in the biology and culture of freshwater fish; experience planning and conducting research, analyzing data and experience with customers and stakeholders, scientists from academia and other agencies, and industry partners in maintaining on-going professional relationships; and experience reporting, interpreting and relating significant results in peer reviewed scientific journals and making presentations at scientific and stakeholder meetings, as it relates to water quality management and production system engineering in fish aquaculture.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
