Duties

Help
  • Duties listed are at the full performance level.
  • Use botanical and ecological methods, techniques, and procedures to identify vegetation communities and conduct vegetation inventories.
  • Assist or train other assigned field personnel to recognize, identify, and locate plant species of concern.
  • Map forest tract data using digital mapping systems
  • Develop and implement management plans and partnerships for the control of invasive plant species and establishment of native vegetation
  • Evaluate, develop, implement and monitor invasive species and native plant community restoration projects.
  • Prepare informational responses to internal directives or agency, public group, and individual inquiries.
  • Provide analytical data and information related to vegetation to complete or assist in consultation with project partners
  • Develop and/or modify established procedures for recording plant survey information and conduct field inventories
  • Prepare and administer contracts and agreements for the treatment of invasive plants and/or restoration of native plant communities

  • The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over rough, uneven ground, and recurring bending, crouching, and stooping.
  • Work is performed in an office, in the field, in a greenhouse, and in the laboratory.
  • Field work hazards include risk of injury from falls, strains, striking against brush and overhanging branches, and occasional exposure to inclement weather as well as insects, ticks, snakes and bears.

Qualifications

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT): This position requires experience using plant taxonomic keys to identify trees, shrubs, forbs, and graminoids (grasses, sedges, and rushes) to the species level.

Basic Requirement for Botany Series (0430):
Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
--OR--
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
GS-7:

At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in federal service. To qualify based on experience, your resume must include the following:
--Implementing botanical investigations that affect native, nonnative, invasive, threatened, endangered, and/or sensitive plant species.
--Preparing data summaries, graphs and charts, and sections of botany related reports on plant species and plant community and vegetation management.
--Gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological and public use data, or other information pertinent to the resource projects, research studies and/or scientific investigations.

OR one full year of graduate level education directly related to the work of the position;

OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience described above;

OR Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go to: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-policies/#url=exp). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

GS-9: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in federal service. To qualify based on experience, your resume must include the following:
--Locating, surveying, identifying, and recording threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements.
--Maintaining data files, collecting and preparing vouchers, maintaining the herbarium, and summarizing data.
--Writing summaries of plant community and vegetation management data, and reporting observations and recommendations.
--Evaluating and monitoring plant species and plant community and vegetation management projects

OR Substitution of Education for Experience (HR/SME):Master's degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., with coursework directly related to work of position which is botany.

OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education described above. Only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work
