Summary

About the Position: Serves as small craft operator and relief boat operator and deckhand to the chief boat operator on a survey boat, engaged in reconnaissance and hydrographic surveys pertinent to the improvement of bars, harbors, estuaries and channels. Pilots the boat and performs a variety of duties involved in the maintenance, repair and housekeeping of the floating plant.

Duties

Help
  • Operates a Survey Boat (<104 feet) engaged in reconnaissance and hydrographic surveys.
  • During the scheduled absence of the regular boat operator, assumes responsibility for the operation of the larger Survey vessel (>50 feet).
  • Assist survey technicians with set-up and other operations relating to the accomplishment of surveys.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair work.
  • Handle and fasten hawsers and mooring ropes to piers.
  • Performs light rigging as required.
  • Prepare surfaces to be painted by removing old paint, using paint remover, scraping or chipping.
  • Make regular inspections of engine room and generator room to determine that all equipment is functioning properly.
  • Load and store supplies to and from the boat.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a Test Designated Position and is subject to the DA Drug Testing Program. Selectee must satisfactorily pass an initial drug test.
  • Position is in a medical surveillance program. Selectee must satisfactorily pass a pre-employment physical and is subject to an annual physical thereafter.
  • Temporary duty travel may be required up to 50%.
  • Must obtain Radar Observer, Unlimited endorsement within 120 days of being appointed.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Small Craft Operator~ without more than normal supervision. You must have the ability to perform common tasks of a Small Craft Operator. Operate a variety of boats, work boats, or towboats, ranging in size up to 104' in length, line handling and electronic navigation systems. Work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: (Screen Out Element): The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess a current U.S. Coast Guard Master, 100 Tons, Near Coastal Waters, license at the time of application.   • Physical Effort - Incumbent is required to exert moderate to heavy physical effort ( up to 50 lbs ) in maintaining equipment on boat, and to handle survey equipment. Moderate effort is required during general maintenance work. Employee may be required to stand for prolonged periods and climb narrow, steep stairways and ladders. Incumbent must possess depth and color perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to operate boat. Incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle in order to get to and from the vessel, or transfer vessel from worksite to worksite.
  • Working Conditions - Work is normally performed inside pilothouse but some time is spent on deck where there is exposure to all types of weather and water conditions with the danger of falling into river and ocean and drowning. Much of the time will be spent operating in unprotected coastal waters, the Puget Sound and adjacent waters as well as estuaries and rivers which increases dangers to operator and craft, and is subject to the hazards of sudden storms, rough water, tides, wind and abnormal currents. Incumbent is exposed to noise in excess of 80 decibels, and the effects of acids, solvents and paints on a regular and recurring basis.
