Summary

You will serve as the Collection Manager in the Curator Branch of the NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND (NHHC), overseeing the daily operations of the Collection Management Facility in Richmond, VA including inventorying, cataloging, and storing artifacts; managing the facility to ensure that it is in good working order; and guiding the Collection Management Section through best practices for managing a museum collection.

Duties

Help
  • You will serve as the lead for the NHHC backlog elimination and baseline inventory projects
  • You will oversee the inventory, cataloging, and storage of the headquarters artifact collection and advise the Collection Management Section on best practices for managing a museum collection.
  • You will generate written reports such as inventories and project status reports.
  • You will manage the day-to-day operation of the 300,000 square foot NHHC Collection Management Facility (CMF), ensuring it is well maintained and functioning efficiently.
  • You will supervise the Curator Branch staff located at CMF assigning tasks, ensuring training compliance, conducting training, establishing yearly objectives, and conducting performance reviews.
  • You will answer technical and general inquiries on artifacts in the collection

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate performing most or all of the following: 1) Developing and implementing plans of action to eliminate artifact backlog and establishing a baseline inventory of the artifact collection; 2) Overseeing the input of catalog data into a museum database management system; 3) Collaborating with management on the implementation of registrar and curatorial process and procedures; 4) Assisting in daily operations management of a museum collections storage facility; and 5) Leading the work of junior level employees to ensure an organization's goals are met.

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: You must have demonstrated experience performing tasks associated with managing a museum collection management facility and supervising a staff of museum professionals.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:
1) Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.
OR
2) Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1) above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OR
3) Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in 1) above.
