This position is located in a state, field or area office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The primary purpose of the position is to support the complete range of soil survey activities in the service area, which has complex soil conditions. Provides technical leadership for the State Soil Resource activities and ensures that quantity and quality of the work performed meets National Cooperative Soil Survey standards.
Conducts investigations to determine soil suitability for special crops, highways, structures, etc. Makes soil maps including identifying and classifying soil types and phases.
Prepares documentation including soil profile descriptions, records data, and compiles field notes. Collects soil samples for special projects.
Reviews and makes recommendations for revision of technical guides and other charts and tables made to interpret soil survey information to NRCS personnel.
Conduct education and information activities related to the public uses and understanding of soils information.

Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement: Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility. OR Combination of Education and Experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting one of the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must meet the following Minimum Qualifications Requirement in order to be considered:
For the GS-09 grade level Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or higher in the Federal service (or private sector equivalent). For this position, examples of specialized experience include experience such as: create and maintain soils map digitally; examines soil property and performance information to identify and correct errors and gaps in data; records soil data on digital or hard copy aerial photographs; studies the characteristics of soil; and writes technical and non-technical material dealing with soils and the soil survey. OR Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience
2 or more years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in soil science or a directly related discipline;

Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100% as outlined in OPM Qualifications policy.
For the GS-11 grade level Specialized Experience:To qualify for the GS-11 level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. This experience must be in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience includes: Provide support to field offices for technical soil services; assist with Farm Bill program assessments and work collaboratively with Soil Survey offices; assist with maintenance, interpretation, and distribution of soil survey information; assist in the development of training for NRCS employees and other technical specialists. OR Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience for the GS-11 level: Three year(s) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in soil science or a closely related discipline; OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Physical Demands: This job requires traversing all types of terrain on foot, crossing fences, and the operation of hand and power tools to examine soils in place and to take soil samples. Substantial physical effort is required. To perform some of these duties the employee must serve as an incidental motor vehicle operator.
Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurrent exposure to operating equipment such as backhoe, probe truck, and earth moving equipment and adverse weather conditions such as snow, wind, wet soils, and icy field conditions.
