Duties

Help

  • Provides assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department.
  • Obtains patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact health status.
  • Evaluates patients for emergency medical conditions, order appropriate diagnostic studies and perform a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician.
  • Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations.
  • Assists with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of chest drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition.
  • Recognizes life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols.
  • Performs dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care.
  • Responds as necessary to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT).
  • Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in CPR, basic, and advanced emergency medical care techniques if appropriately trained and qualified.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/24/2020.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

  • Must be to communicate in spoken and written English.
  • Must have current Basic Life Saving (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (submit with documents if you currently possess these certifications)
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Monitoring vital signs, administering medication, assessing body systems, monitoring life support equipment, and implementing care plans; recognizing and responding to life threatening situations utilizing appropriate emergency treatment. Work experience in which you were responsible for a number of technical procedures, e.g., inserting intravenous catheters, performing venipunctures and arterial punctures, assisting in emergency surgery, splinting, suture removal, ear irrigations, inserting nasogastric, basic IV fluids, oxygen. Work experience which demonstrate assisting physicians with specialized monitoring, diagnostic and treatment procedures.

  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education with the subject area of medical health or related fields.
Preferred Experience: Paramedic Certification and former military personnel who served as Army medics, Air Force Medical Technicians, and Navy and Coast Guard hospital corpsmen.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting, 45 pounds and over, Heavy carrying, 45 pounds and over, Straight pulling, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, repeated bending, climbing, use of legs and arms, both legs required, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted), mental and emotional stability. There will also be exposure to infectious or contagious diseases.
