Summary

This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Animal Resources Unit, Ames, Iowa.

The incumbent will examine animals for signs of disease, injury, and abnormal behavior and reports findings to the clinical veterinarian, and collect biological specimens such as organs, blood, feces, urine, tissues, carcasses, and culture samples from animals and animal facilities in accordance with established guidelines and protocols.

Duties

Help
  • Administer veterinarian prescribed treatments by various routes such as IV, IM, SQ, or orally.
  • Knowledge of animal physiology in order to determine normal temperatures, respiratory rates, heart rates, and basic blood values common domestic and laboratory animals.
  • Set eggs for incubation or hatching for biological or diagnostic testing.
  • Maintain production and use information on blood supply, swabs for culture and sensitivities germ-free, and specific pathogen-free (SPF) animals to be used in research and testing.
  • Oversee the maintenance drug inventory, treatment records in a computerized animal inventory system.
  • Use biosafety cabinets, euthanasia chambers, anesthesia machines, and animal isolator units (cages, housing), power washers and cage washers.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience working with infectious animals; collecting, preparing, and evaluating blood or tissue samples from animals; and operating and maintaining laboratory equipment including anesthesia machines, biosafety cabinets, euthanasia chambers, or isolator units.

OR

Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters' or equivalent graduate degree, related degrees may include Biology, Animal Science, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For example, 6 months of specialized experience combined with 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands:
Incumbent performs activities involving the collection of biological specimens and the observation and treatment of animals. Moderate to heavy physical exertion is sometimes required to move equipment and carcasses (60 pounds) stooping, bending, reaching, and active walking are required.

Work Environment:
Part of the work is performed in climate controlled buildings and part of the work is performed outside where exposure to environmental weather extremes occurs. The incumbent is required to work with various species of animals where there is the risk of injury through scratches, bites, and kicks. There may be exposure to various animal odors and noxious stimuli such as blood and body parts at packing plants. The position requires the use of syringes, needles, and knives where there is a risk of self-inflicted wounds. The incumbent maybe required to wear protective clothing such as surgical masks or respirators, boots, gloves, and when working around animals that represent a potential source of zoonotic diseases or other biohazards.
