Summary

The incumbent is a Supervisory Research Food Technologist in the Food Processing and Sensory Quality Research Unit at the Southern Regional Research Center, New Orleans, LA. As Research Leader, the incumbent has overall responsibility for managing research activities of the unit laboratories, processing pilot plant, and personnel for maintaining the Unit's research capabilities, and for allocating funds, space, equipment, and personnel resources to maximize productivity.

Duties

Help
  • Characterization of off flavors and color in catfish
  • Enhance the utilization of byproducts from aquaculture product processing
  • Generate new processed catfish definitions for uniform sensory quality and grading standards and enable economical, accurate and real-time commercial methods to monitor sensory attributes of processed catfish
  • Enable new commercial value added post-harvest processes and innovative packaging technologies that maintain/improve the sensory qualities and shelf life of processed catfish.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Food Technology Series (1382): Degree. Food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science. The course work must have been comprised of at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and physical sciences and included at least 20 semester hours in food technology and closely related subjects, or 20 semester hours in subjects that can be applied directly to food technology.

OR

Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major, including the course work specified, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

At the GS-14:
Applicants must demonstrate at least 1 full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experiencerequirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: Experience planning and conducting research as it relates to food product development and principles of processing and packaging; experience conducting research as it relates to fish composition and factors affecting quality including flavor, color and texture attributes; managing research budgets including grants and other soft funds as well as appropriated funds; managing human, physical, and fiscal resources to achieve the research mission, as well as managing individual and team research projects to address research goals and priorities; and effectively communicating with government officials, internal and external scientific colleagues, scientific organizations, and industry stakeholders.

At the GS-15:
Applicants must demonstrate as least 1 full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-15 grade level of this position are: experience leading and conducting research as it relates to food product development and principles of processing and packaging; experience leading and conducting research as it relates to fish composition and factors affecting quality including flavor, color and texture attributes; developing and managing research budgets, including grants and other soft funds as well as appropriated funds; managing human, physical and fiscal resources to achieve the research mission, as well as managing individual, Unit and components of national scale research projects to address research goals and priorities; and establishing cooperation and effective communication with government officials, internal and external scientific colleagues, scientific organizations, and industry stakeholders.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience..
