There are two vacancies and will be filled in either Moffett Field, CA and/or Pasadena, CA; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Duties

Help

As a Research Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

-Plans, organizes, and conducts geophysical research aimed at the development and advancement of fundamental concepts in the physics of earthquake sources, either natural or induced.

-Carries out an innovative program of fundamental research using data science approaches applied to seismological observations to understand earthquake source physics and rupture dynamics.

-Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

B.  A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described above, such as:  geophysical research aimed at the development and advancement of fundamental concepts in the physics of natural or induced earthquake sources. Using data science approaches applied to seismological observations to understand earthquake source physics and rupture dynamics. Presenting results of this research in scientific publications and conferences. 

This experience must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research.  The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science.  This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research or providing the means of exploring the application of science in a major area.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

--Basis of Rating: Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. If you meet the basic qualification and eligibility requirements of this position, you will be contacted via email after the vacancy announcement closes and given 10 calendar days to submit narrative responses that address the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to perform the duties of this position. 1.  Ability to carry out fundamental research using seismological observations to understand earthquake source physics and rupture dynamics.   Applying these research results to understand the physical processes and subsurface conditions controlling earthquake generation, source properties and recurrence.
2.  Knowledge of and expertise in applying modern computational techniques, such as data science and machine learning, to take the fullest possible advantage of observational datasets available for analysis, and to understand the limitations of the data and the inherent uncertainties in deductions drawn from them.
3.  Ability to publish research in respected peer-reviewed scientific journals on subjects such as using seismological data to gain new physical insights into the factors that control earthquake rupture.
4.  Ability to collaborate with researchers from other institutions to pursue research objectives of common interest and recognition as a leader in the field of seismology.
