About the Position:
Serves as member of the interdisciplinary team of archivists, archaeologists, and anthropologists conducting assessments of archival materials, in accordance with the Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX CMAC) protocols and standards.

This position will be located in St. Louis, MO and will allow for situational telework only. This position is NOT eligible for Full-time telework.

Duties

Help
  • Performs original organization and modified cataloging of archival materials and archaeological associated documentation - manuscript materials, photos, films, oversize materials, electronic materials, and audiovisuals.
  • Uses standard cataloging rules to catalog and process material in a variety of formats. Applies knowledge of archival cataloging systems and professional standards.
  • Organizes (classifies) and catalogs materials to make them accessible to users through automated finding aids in a variety of formats. Ensures finding aids are accurate and current. Maintains name and subject authority control records.
  • Provides reference and research assistance to MCX CMAC personnel, customers, and contractors.
  • Interviews and interacts with customers to establish user needs.
  • Accesses locally available information resources, on-line computer databases, and other libraries; primary historical resources, or external subject resources. Creates appropriate search strategies. Explains arrangement and resources of the facility.
  • Performs assessments of customers' records (archival and non-archival) and provides recommendations for managing the records and making them more accessible for research.
  • Ensures quality of data gathered during assessments by performing quality control checks on team member work product. Writes detailed reports for completed assessments, including budget and schedule estimates based on the provided recommendations.
  • Responsible for coordination with project leader to ensure proper evaluation techniques are utilized in the field and that the evaluation is reported according to MCX CMAC protocols and standards.
  • Assists with the electronic document systems, the archival preservation of electronic media, and applicable professional standards for these materials.
  • Assists with digitization (scanning or photographic capture) of historical documents and site set up and training for such work.
  • Writes and presents information about specific military engagements, historical military equipage and uniforms, and gives an overall context of significant historical documents to users, researchers, and the public.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Archivist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in archival science; or bachelor's degree (or higher degree) with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: At least 30 semester hours of courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Acceptable experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Minimum Qualifications GS-09:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coordinating with customers to define archival or collection needs and/or establish project requirements; gathering archival and/or archaeological collection data for use in the development of inventories and/or reports; and completing large size, complex assessments (100-500 boxes) of ill-defined scope, series, or other groupings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: archival science, history, or American civilization.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

  • Term appointments may be extended up to a maximum of 8 years. This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.
