Help

As an FTC Intern (Information Technology) you will;

  • Assist with the Office of Technology Research and Investigation's projects, which include technical research exploring fraud, privacy, data security, online and mobile advertising, payment systems, malware, and more.
  • Assist teams investigating alleged violations of the statutes enforced by the FTC or of the Commission's rules and regulations.
  • Assist with special projects and tasks as assigned.

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship. If graduation from an undergraduate program is expected by Spring 2020, must be accepted for enrollment to a fall graduate program and able to provide verification of this acceptance.

To qualify, you must meet the qualifications requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Basic Qualifications: You must be enrolled in a full-time advanced degree program terminating in a Ph.D. or a Ph.D.-equivalent degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management and have at least one year of experience in one of the above fields (including through enrollment in coursework to be completed prior to appointment).


To qualify for this position at the GS-11 level, you must possess the following:

  • Currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in a relevant field terminating in a Ph.D. degree or a Ph.D.-equivalent degree.
  • one year of qualifying specialized experience (including through enrollment in coursework to be completed prior to appointment) equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service, performing the following types of tasks: conducting technology research; performing analysis of technology concepts; preparing technical topics for presentation or publication; drafting technical reports; and analyzing data from studies.
Pathways Internship Program Requirements:
  • Must be enrolled or accepted as a degree-seeking student.
  • Must be enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment in an accredited school.
  • Must be taking a full-time academic course load.

Graduate Education: You must be enrolled or have been enrolled in an advanced degree program in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or have an advanced degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
