Summary

This position is located in Region 6 - The Pacific Northwest.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead a small marking crew performing a variety of timber sale preparation (TSP) duties that include but are not limited to timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout as part of the unit's timber management program.

  • Position will lead a small timber marking crew (3-5 individuals) implementing silvicultural prescriptions and restoration objectives on the ground.
  • Mark and cruise timber using forestry related tools.
  • Assign work daily to members of marking crew and ensure quality control of timber marking.
  • Assist with timber sale layout, GPS?ing, and ensuring the safety and whereabouts of their crew members.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the date the certificate of eligible candidates is issued. Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-4 level: Applicants must have six months of any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level. Examples of qualifying experience are: Examples of general experience are: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding/tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; worked in a greenhouse, nursery or landscaping, e.g., planting, moving, watering, and tending plants; worked as an animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store; other work experience, paid or unpaid, e.g., volunteer work at a park, youth camp, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc.). Examples of specialized experience are: Performed natural resource support work, forestry, range, park technician, wildland firefighter, or similar jobs; performed routine support assignments in a forestry specialty area, wilderness, timber, or fire prevention/control;

OR an associate's degree or two years of successfully completed education above high school;

OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university and include courses that are related to the occupation of the position.

For the GS-5 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Examples of specialized experience are: Performed crew-based forestry related support work such as selecting and marking individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines, silviculture prescriptions, and specific instruction and/or assisted in the measurement of limiting distances, tree diameter, tree height, estimation of defect and quality, and related fundamental timber cruising procedures;

OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, Forest Management, Forest Resources, Natural Resources, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);

OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

For the GS-6 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience are: Provided support with tree measurements, timber cruising, map reading, compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, GPS and traverse, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; Interpreted silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas; Applied instructions issued in a cruise plan;

OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework in Forest Management, Forest Resources, or Natural Resources;

OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
