Duties

Help

Range Technicians work under the supervision and guidance of professional range and natural resource specialists performing a variety of duties related to monitoring range land conditions, managing herds of wild horses and burros, processing allotment transfers, supervising range use by permits, and investigating unauthorized use. Other duties may include weed management and monument inventory. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions are temporary and are expected to last for approximately 6 months. These positions have no promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade you must apply for the higher grade.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work may take place in extremely remote environments and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Salary: Salary shown is taken from the Rest of the U.S. pay table, step 1. You may view the OPM salary tables, with the various locality rates, at 2020 General Schedule (GS) Locality Pay Tables.

Qualifications

GS-07: one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in the management of public range resources of a district or other specified area by observing and reporting special conditions regarding them; and performing the detailed work necessary to complete specific plans for development of an area for proper range management and conservation; OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

Minimum Age Requirement: Employees required to operate a motor vehicle must be at least 18; otherwise, you must be at least 16 at the time you report for work.

This position is not eligible for Telework.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

A review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements.  Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, your application will be placed in one of three categories:  Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.  Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.    In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position.  The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored.  The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position

  1. Knowledge of processes, methods, and procedures associated with range technician duties sufficient to lay out, schedule, organize, execute and resolve the full range of standard and non-standard range related projects, problems, and irregular situations, determining compliance with allotment plans and other pertinent guidelines. 
  2. Knowledge of basic principles of rangeland management and pertinent guidelines sufficient to evaluate data collected for accuracy, determine causes of variances, and applicability of data to the overall range program/project. 
  3. Knowledge of livestock and livestock management practices sufficient to identify breeds, approximate age, and ownership, and judgment in giving factual information for apparent violations of regulations related to the use and protection of range lands.
  4. Numerical and technical scientific skill in making accurate readings and in reporting conditions.
  5. Skilled in problem solving to maintain good working relationships.
