Duties

Help
  • You will participate in assignments designed to assist you in developing a basic understanding of specialized practices and procedures and a familiarity with work operations.
  • You will provide assistance by independently performing routine and recurring duties which facilitate the conduct of more complex and detailed work by higher-graded employees.
  • You will perform calculations applying standard formulas, and search technical reports, publications, specifications and other sources to compile engineering tables, graphs and charts for use by engineers.
  • You will type, edit, format and print a wide variety of documents, including correspondence, technical reports, briefing documents and charts.
  • You will participate in on-the-job programs at a level commensurate with your knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • You will assist project engineers in documentation preparation, proposed reviews, contract monitoring and test operations aboard ships and land-based test sites.
  • You will apply standard procedures in technical engineering methods and practices within the area of specialization sufficient to select the most efficient methods and procedures.
  • You will recognize and report errors, inconsistencies, and other deficiencies in technical data.

To qualify for the GS-04 Level: You must have successfully completed two full years of post-high school academic study, or an associate's degree, or anticipate such completion within four months of the closing date of this announcement.
To qualify for the GS-03 Level: You must have successfully completed one full year of post-high school academic study, or anticipate such completion within four months of the closing date of this announcement.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:
Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must: Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program; Complete their degree or certificate requirements; Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted; Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and Perform their job successfully

The Pathways appointment has promotion potential to GS-4. If selected below the full performance level, incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

If converted to the competitive service, the competitive service appointment has promotion potential to the NH-03 (GS-12/13 equivalent). PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and a current student enrolled in:
1) A high school or home-school curriculum approved by a State or local governing body;
2) An accredited college (including technical, vocational trade schools, two or four year colleges/universities);
3) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school, etc.); or
4) A Certificate Program in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study, that is part of an accredited, college-level, technical, trade, vocational or business school curriculum. Short-term training and/or certificate programs (i.e., several two-week programs completed or class sessions attended over a period of two years) that are not required for the position or which lack sufficient academic rigor, are not considered an acceptable academic course of study.
