Duties

Help
  • Providing direct patient urgent care, emergent and chronic care services to all agency detainees with significant independence and at times only regional oversight by MDs.
  • Performing comprehensive, age specific and/or focused history and physical examinations, which may include gynecological and pediatric exams/procedures.
  • Screening for and treatment of contagious diseases that may be epidemic in other countries ( e.g. TB including multi- drug resistant TB, Ebola, Zika, HIV, measles, and varicella.
  • Maintaining patient/medical record confidentiality and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) regulations.

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Basic requirements, Selective Placement Factor, and Specialized Experience as noted below.

Basic Requirement:
The GS-0603, Physician Assistant Series has three (3) specific requirements (A,B, and C) which apply to all positions. Select the appropriate response below. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT

A. Education: Applicants must have graduated from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. (A copy must be provided prior to appointment)
B. Licensure: Applicants must have a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (A copy must be provided prior to appointment)
C. Certification: Applicant must have successfully completed a National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination. (Note: you must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification). (A copy must be provided prior to appointment)

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is:
You must possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare provider certification. This certification shall be maintained in a current status at all times while performing services. (A copy must be provided prior to appointment)
AND
You possess an unrestricted license with a state of licensure and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to prescribe controlled medication? (A copy must be provided prior to appointment)
AND
You possess such basic proficiency in spoken and written English that will permit communication with patients and other health-care personnel that will enable you to carry out a person's health-care responsibilities satisfactorily?

Specialized Experience:GS-13: Applicant must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-12 level in the Federal service that included experience such as:

  • Providing direct patient care with significant independence and at times only regional oversight by physicians;
  • Implementing health care policies at the local, state, or national level; AND
  • Treating acute minor illness/injuries to provide continuity of care of chronic illnesses in collaboration with physician colleagues.
