Duties

Help
  • Serves as a resources for genetic stocks and descriptive information on gene and chromosome functions through oversight of the Maize Genetics Stock Collection
  • Conducts and oversees general evaluation and research of new and existing maize mutant accessions, providing seed samples of stocks to plant scientists throughout the world.
  • Serves as primary contact with the USDA Germplasm Resources Information Network, the national computerized germplasm database.
  • Develops new computer procedures and programs to more efficiently manage the collection and associated data.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements

To qualify for to 0440 series:

Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Evaluation of Education: Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation. OR Coursework consisting of an appropriate combination of basic courses in genetics and cytology or statistics are also acceptable.

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-9
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assembling seed samples for use in research and development; and performing data curation for maize genetics by acquiring and consolidating data from collaborators into a database.

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics.

OR

A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.

At the GS-11
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assembling seed samples for use in research and development; performing data curation for maize genetics by acquiring and consolidating data from collaborators into a database; growing and classifying new mutant accessions; and performing tests or procedures in order to examine age, quality, and quantity of seeds.

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics.

OR

A combination of specialized experience and Ph.D. level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
