Duties

Help
  • You will apply a broad range of wildlife conservation principals and techniques in managing populations of federal and state listed species and their habitats.
  • You will develop innovative methods to modify standard practices to minimize damage to wildlife populations and habitats in the context of multiple land uses.
  • You will interpret environmental laws with regard to training, construction, and facilities maintenance projects in compliance with applicable federal legislation and national programs for protection of natural resources.
  • You will develop and implement programmatic agreements and species management plans as negotiated with federal and state fish and wildlife agencies.
  • You will coordinate with conservation agencies, biological consultants, universities and private researchers to plan, develop, and implement wildlife/fisheries populations and habitat management studies, surveys, and improvement projects.
  • You will prepare study designs for wildlife research.

Qualifications

Additional Requirements: In addition to the Basic Requirements listed in the Education section, your resume must also demonstrate one year of specialized experience, as follows:

GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying principles and concepts of wildlife management habitat, fisheries wildlife surveys, suitability evaluations, wetland delineations, and/or natural resources research studies.

GS-11: At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector demonstrating and applying the principles and concepts of management for threatened and endangered species, migratory birds, wetlands, and other sensitive natural resources.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Successfully completed a bachelor's degree in biological science that included: with at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Requirements: In lieu of specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify based on equivalent combination of education and experience, as follows:

GS-11 Education:
Successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
OR
A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

GS-09 Education:
Successfully completed two full years of progressively higher graduate level education leading to a master's degree.
OR
A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
