Duties

Help
  • You will fabricate museum quality artifact mounts in accordance with best industry practices.
  • You will inspect and track exhibit maintenance and correction issue; walk through exhibits routinely, record damaged areas and failed exhibit components and add them to the maintenance schedules.
  • You will manage the paint supply; prepare and submit supply requests to include research, completing necessary forms, tracking requests, receiving and storing materials.
  • You will manage track, store, and properly dispose of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
  • You will implement exhibit branch and industry drawings standards for small exhibit design and fabrication.
  • You will assess artifacts for safety and exhibit mount requirements; maintain exhibits and galleries using basic general carpentry and painting skills and create, update and maintain exhibit lighting plans using AutoCAD software.

  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • This position requires normal color vision.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: maintaining the exhibits, galleries, displays, and exhibit lighting; conducting exhibit maintenance using fabrication, mending, and model making; researching and procuring supplies and equipment; and managing a safety HAZMAT program.

Education

In lieu of specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify based on education or equivalent combination of experience and education and experience, as follows:

Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a major study such as illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position.
OR
Successfully completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a major study such as illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position.
OR
Obtained an LL.B. or J.D. that is related to the position being filled in a major study such as illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position.
OR
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

Physical Demands:
Work is of a semi-strenuous nature, and on occasion, involves applying paint and working at various heights. The position involves lighting, stooping, climbing and carrying. The incumbent routinely lifts objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Some work requires wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment.

Work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items, such as artwork, exhibit items, and artifacts. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity. This is typical of work involving installation and maintenance of exhibits, or on-site inspection or oversight of one or more phases of the production of an exhibit product.

Work Environment:
Work involves moderate risks or discomforts such as working with power tools or irritant or hazardous substances, and may require special safety precautions and the use of protective masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, or boots.
