Duties

Help
  • Lead and instruct a workforce of animal caretakers assigned to the care, feeding, handling, restraint, and breeding of swine and poultry and use equipment such as automatic feeders and tractors.
  • Coordinates activities of employees explaining work requirements, methods, and procedures.
  • Recognize the symptoms of the more common swine and poultry diseases and abnormalities.
  • Identify and check breeding age females for signs of estrous and separating those animals in heat to specific breeding pens for mating.
  • Record keeping of basic data such as amounts of feed and water consumed, feed refusals, body weights, and the amounts of feed and rations on hand for inventory purposes, breeding and birthing data.
  • Administer medications and drugs in the proper amounts as prescribed and directed by the veterinarian or standard operating procedures.
  • Feed animals in accordance with specific instructions regarding diets.
  • Collect samples of feed, urine, feces, or blood for lab analysis.
  • Carry out assignments based on written or oral guidelines provided by the supervisor without further instructions.
  • Skilled in the operation and maintenance of both mechanical and electronic scales, automatic feeders and feeding gates, loading chutes, restraining devices, tractors.
  • Clean barns, pens, lots, and other animal shelters; disposes of manure, sawdust, and straw in the proper manner; provides bedding in amounts that is conducive to the health and comfort of the animals.
  • Restrain animals in a safe and humane manner in order to prevent injury to the animals and employees.

  • Obtain and maintain certification by USDA Food Inspection Service for Meat Cutter.

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The incumbent is often required to lift and carry feed, animals and materials weighing up to 80 lbs. Light to heavy physical effort is required in the scraping, shoveling and .hauling of manure. Physical effort and agility are required in the handling and restraining of animals in accomplishing many of the tasks related to the care and maintenance of the physical facilities. The incumbent makes frequent movements of arms and legs to manipulate tractor controls and equipment.

Working Conditions:
Incumbent is subjected to a wide temperature change (-10°F to 100°F) during winter months when going from heated to unheated barns and out of doors. Is subject to disagreeable odor, dust and noise, also physical injury due to unexpected animal behavior,equipment malfunction, and to danger from lifting, pushing or falls on damp, wet, and slippery surfaces. Subject to cuts and bruises from flying objects and branches while operating tractors. Subject to injury from accidents while driving trucks or when loading and unloading vehicles.

Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
