The incumbent performs the full range of electrician's duties on electrical distribution systems that involve installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, testing, and loading new and existing electrical systems, equipment and their components.
Summary
This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Centers for Animail Health (NCAH), Facilities Engineering Unit in Ames, Iowa.
The incumbent performs the full range of electrician's duties on electrical distribution systems that involve installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, testing, and loading new and existing electrical systems, equipment and their components.
Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, replacement and repair of electrical distribution systems, oil and dry transformers, and wide range of voltage (15 KV (kilovolt) level and under), amperage, phase and frequency, etc.
Plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
Interpret and apply the National Electric code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties (e.g. voltage, voltage drop, etc).
Utilize a wide variety of test equipment such as screw drivers and conduit benders, and test meters, voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters and ohmmeters.
Knowledge of wire size, type and arrangement for proper and safe operation of electrical systems.
Ability to troubleshoot VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) and some of their components.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent performs duties in crawl spaces, on ladders and scaffolding. Operates boom truck. Work requires close hand and eye coordination, active walking, prolonged periods of standing on concrete floors, climbing, bending, reaching and working cramped positions or crowded areas or confined spaces (manholes). May be required to lift equipment or material weighing up to 75 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent usually performs work inside heated building, but may be required to work on equipment located outside of buildings and on rooftops: Incumbent is subject to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock, bums, infection, mechanical injury; gas, cuts, bruises, fumes, dirt and grease.
Clothing changes are provided by NADC while a duty station. May be required to shower prior to reporting to duty station in accordance with entrance/exit safety protocols for specific areas of the Center. Safety equipment must be used when required. Incumbent is required to wear a full-faced respirator when working in biological control settings.
