Duties

Help
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies food samples and supporting records.
  • Assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to food research.
  • Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.
  • Performs routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-06:

Qualifying experience for the GS-06 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to related projects on metabolism at the GS-05 level which would be directly transferrable expertise for the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with collecting food samples in a laboratory environment; assisting with recording or analyzing scientific data; and operating standard laboratory equipment in support of an experiment related to food.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Microbiology, Chemistry, Statistics, or Cell Biology or other related fields (e.g., food microbiology, food chemistry).

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

At the GS-07:
Qualifying experience for the GS-07 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to related projects on metabolism at the GS-06 level which would be directly transferrable expertise for the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting food samples in a laboratory environment; recording or analyzing scientific data; and operating standard laboratory equipment in support of an experiment related to food.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Microbiology, Chemistry, Statistics, or Cell Biology or other related fields (e.g., food microbiology, food chemistry).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

  • Biology
  • Research
