Duties

Help
  • Install, repair and maintain a variety of commercially-made laboratory equipment such as freeze dryers, refrigerated centrifuges, reverse cycle heat pumps, and cascade systems.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and sketches in laying out systems and installing equipment, ducts and piping.
  • Ability to read and follow complex electrical diagrams in order to repair or replace a wide variety of electrical components and controls.
  • Prepare sketches and circuit diagrams and interprets blueprints and specifications.
  • Detect and correct leaks in refrigeration systems, and tests overhauled or reconditioned systems.
  • Install, service and maintain control systems using electric, electronic, solid state, and pneumatic controls.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement:
11/27/2019Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration.

Physical Effort:
Considerable physical effort is used when working on parts or systems that are in hard to reach places. Incumbent must bend, stoop, kneel and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Must frequently carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh 30 to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
The work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to burns, electrical shocks, cuts and bruises and sudden changes in temperature from hot to cold. Is exposed to the possibility of toxic effects on eyes, skin, and respiratory system when working with refrigerant gases.

Other Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Universal (Type I, II, III) technician certification for refrigerant transition and recovery (as required by the EPA in 40 CFR, Part 82, Subpart F).
  • Subject to oncall duty outside normal duty hours, in accordance with procedures established for control of such on-call duty. May be required to work weekends, holidays, or before/after normal duty hours when necessary; may be required to report for duty during emergencies, critical periods, or during times when the Government is closed due to inclement weather.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State issued driver's license to operate a government-owned motor vehicle.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly Installation, Repair, etc.
