Duties

Help

As a SMALL ARMS REPAIRER (Title 32), WG-6610-6/7/8, you will perform maintenance, repair, and inspection on a full range of small arms and related devices.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:

  • Perform overhaul, maintenance and repair on a variety of small arms that involve numerous parts, subassemblies, adjustments, and must be adjusted to close tolerances.
  • Diagnose and identify mechanical deficiencies and/or malfunctions in weapons, such as automatic pistols, revolvers, shotguns, and automatic rifles.
  • Diagnose and identify mechanical deficiencies and/or malfunctions in weapons to include, but not limited to, grenade launchers, machine guns, rocket launchers, mortars, and other small arms and accessories.
  • Disassemble weapons, assemblies, subassemblies, and other components.
  • After disassembly of weapons, examine for defects, mechanical misalignment, and malfunctions.
  • Replace barrels, firing pins, springs, trigger mechanisms, shell ejectors, sights, sights, safety devices, bolts, stocks, and other parts and assemblies.
  • Modify small weapons by replacing obsolete parts.
  • Apply finishing agents and test fires and/or perform operational checks of arms repaired to ensure safety, accuracy, and ease of operation.
  • Apply modification work orders as required.
  • Use hand and power tools, precisions gauges, test instruments, jigs and alignment devices in making repairs, modifications, and adjustments to small arms.
  • Ensure accountability, storage, and security of arms and other sensitive items while they are kept for repair.
  • Serve as a commodity inspector during required evaluations.
  • Possess knowledge of interrelated mechanical systems to check, repair, adjust weapons, and perform necessary work to repair or rebuild small arms.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours, overtime may be required.

Qualifications

Military Grades: Warrant Officer/Enlisted - May not exceed the rank of CW4.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must possess experience or training which demonstrates a working knowledge to read and interpret instructions, repair manual, specifications and drawings; must have a knowledge of shop mathematics sufficient to use testing devices and measuring instruments; and be proficient in the use and maintenance of hand tools and equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-08 Level - Must possess specialized experience for the WG-08 Level, which includes at least 18 months experience or training which demonstrates ability to work effectively and efficiently on weapons and mechanical systems in disassembly for repair, inspection to diagnose mechanical malfunctioning, wear and/or damage is required; experience in adjustment of levers, gear linkages and synchronization of interrelated mechanical systems; experience in applying technical manuals, regulations, specifications and drawings to determine operation, assembly and a tolerance of the variety of weapons cleaned, repaired and modified, is required; experience in using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and gages is required; tools include drills, files, saws, hammers, vises and precision gages and measuring instruments such as micrometers, optical comparators, ultrasonic checkers, magna fluxing machines and/or borescopes to determine when parts are worn or damaged beyond acceptable tolerances. WG-07 Level - Must possess specialized experience for the WG-07 Level, which includes at least 12 months experience or training which demonstrates ability to work effectively and efficiently on weapons and mechanical systems in disassembly for repair, inspection to diagnose mechanical malfunctioning, wear and/or damage is required; experience in adjustment of levers, gear linkages and synchronization of interrelated mechanical systems; experience in applying technical manuals, regulations, specifications and drawings to determine operation, assembly and a tolerance of the variety of weapons cleaned, repaired and modified, is required; experience in using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and gages is required; tools include drills, files, saws, hammers, vises and precision gages and measuring instruments such as micrometers, optical comparators, ultrasonic checkers, magna fluxing machines and/or borescopes to determine when parts are worn or damaged beyond acceptable tolerances. WG-06 Level -Must possess specialized experience for the WG-06 Level, which includes at least 6 months experience or training in using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and gages is required; tools include drills, files, saws, hammers, vises and precision gages and measuring instruments such as micrometers, optical comparators, ultrasonic checkers, magna fluxing machines and/or borescopes to determine when parts are worn or damaged beyond acceptable tolerances; experience in applying technical manuals, regulations, specifications and drawings to determine operation, assembly and a tolerance of the variety of weapons cleaned, repaired and modified.
