Summary

Work Environment/Physical Demands: The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include steep, wet, uneven surfaces, and muddy, dusty conditions that may soil clothes/skin. Work conditions include weather such as rain, wind, sunshine, extreme temperature variations, and loud noises/vibrations from working with power tools/other equipment. The position requires physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, reaching, or similar.

Duties

Help

Engineering equipment operators operate heavy gasoline or diesel powered equipment consisting of motor graders, tractors with attachments, dozer tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators and brush cutters to reconstruct and maintain gravel or surfaced highways and timber access roads. Although the primary responsibility is the operation of equipment, operators may also be engage in operating forklifts to load and unload materials in an indoor/outdoor environment and in some manual labor as necessary such as completing minor maintenance projects such as cleaning culverts and ditches, installing cattle guards, culverts, signs and/or fences, and basic carpentry. They may also perform light maintenance and minor repairs on gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment and/or motor vehicles.

THE SCREENOUT FACTORS FOR THIS POSITION at all grade levels: You must be able to do the work of this position without more than normal supervision and you must have a Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

WG-08: At this level, engineering equipment operators follow oral instructions and written work orders largely without direct supervision. They make independent decisions on technical matters and they may act as crew lead on projects with multiple operators. On highly technical projects they would operate under the guidance of a higher graded engineer. 

MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Employees required to operate a motor vehicle must be at least 18.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

This position is not eligible for Telework.

Government facilities are required to provide a smoke free environment for their employees. Smoking will be permitted only in designated areas.

This position may require you to wear an officially-approved uniform while in a duty status.

MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Employees required to operate a motor vehicle must be at least 18; otherwise, you must be at least 16 at the time you report for work.

At some duty locations you may need the ability to lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions are temporary and are expected to last for up to 6 months. These positions have no promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade you must apply for the higher grade.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

This position also requires special qualifications that have been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as screen-out elements. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the below screen out elements will be rated not qualified.
