Summary

Duties

Help

The primary purpose of this position is to establish, develop, and implement an internal communications plan for the National Gallery of Art, manage the museum’s general calendar of events and e-newsletter,  and develop and implement integrated communications plans as it relates to a wide variety of public programs including but not limited to lectures, concerts, and films.

The incumbent:

  • Establishes, develops, and maintains effective relationships with media representatives, providing timely, continual information on NGA programs.
  • Suggests ways in which the Gallery can work more effectively with media, making recommendations to the DIO Chief.
  • As assigned by DIO Chief, develops and carries out integrated promotion and outreach strategies for NGA public programs, and other activities as assigned, with the goal of increasing attendance, positive public reaction, and engagement (in person and online).
  • Researches and writes a variety of materials, including press releases, flyers, ads, social media content, and scripts, selects and manages images, and coordinates photo and video sessions to promote the Gallery and to enable media to cover gallery activities.
  • Coordinates with the DIO Chief the planning of press events and promotional activities related to assigned areas of promotion (public programs, internal communications).
  • Researches, selects, and contacts appropriate press representatives to attend and/or cover events.
  • Prepares and produces agenda, remarks, and other materials needed for the attendees, and coordinates all audio-visual material for assigned press events.
  • Prepares summary reports on media coverage of integrated communications plans.  In coordination with DIO Chief, fields or responds to requests for and plans and coordinates media appearances and interviews by Gallery personnel.
  • Prepares background information, coordinates briefing sessions, and obtains necessary audiovisual aids to assist NGA personnel and media representatives in producing articles broadcasts, and presentations.
  • Prepares and sends monthly online newsletters on behalf of the Gallery in promotion of public programs and upcoming events.
  • Manages production of quarterly program highlights brochures, including content creation, list management, approvals, and distribution.
  • Establishes, develops, and maintains effective relationships with NGA departments, providing timely, continual promotion of NGA programs.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1035-11. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9, creating and implementing integrated communications plans for an organization, aimed at winning board support and public enthusiasm.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  1. Knowledge applicable to a wide range of duties involving oral and written communication principles, practices, techniques and methods; analytical methods; and interpersonal relations practices and demonstrated skill sufficient to create integrated communications plans to promote a broad variety of content.
  2. Skill in applying knowledge in the modification of standard methods and adaptation of approaches in developing new information materials aimed at enhancing the understanding of groups or individuals sufficient to develop and implement integrated communications plans to promote the Gallery’s many public program offerings, included but not limited to concerts, films, and lectures.
  3. Knowledge applicable to and skill in assessing public reaction and identifying extent of understanding achieved sufficient to analyze programs and identify the characteristics of target audiences; determine most effective means and distribution of information; and evaluate effectiveness of information programs.
  4. Working knowledge of print, broadcast, and digital media organizations’ procedures and programs and/or publications sufficient to explain significant issues to generally responsive groups or individuals interested in the Gallery’s programs.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
