Duties

This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), Gulf of Mexico OCS Region (GOMR), Resource Evaluation, Resource Studies Section, Data Acquisition and Special Projects Unit in Jefferson, LA.

The incumbent works closely with other geologists, geophysicists, and supervisors of the BOEM GOMR office to perform a variety of technical assignments related to resource studies, geological and geophysical (G&G) permitting, data acquisition, data procurement, and data release.  

At the full performance level (GS-12) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Reviews applications for and issues permits to acquire prelease geological and geophysical (G&G) data on the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and Atlantic OCS, in accordance with regulations 30 CFR 551 & 580.
  2. Provides technical advice regarding Resource Evaluation’s data acquisition and procurement programs.
  3. Develops, coordinates, plans, and monitors data handling and processing procedures for hardware/software systems involving geological, geophysical, and engineering data and information.
  4. Provides lifecycle management of G&G data consisting of identifying, prioritizing, budgeting, acquiring, loading, maintaining, securing and releasing G&G data to the public.
  5. Maintains and provides a data management system for the G&G data acquired under permit.

BOEM has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Special Salary Rate Range Information: GS-09: $60,036 - $78,042 per annum; GS-11: $72,637 - $94,434 per annum; GS-12: $87,062 - $113,184 per annum. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
To qualify for this position you must meet the (1) Basic Educational Requirements AND (2) Minimum Qualifications for the series/grade to which you are applying.  

(1) Basic Educational Requirements:
In addition to the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants must meet the Education Requirements described below:

Geophysicist GS-1313 

You must meet the description in either A or B below to qualify for this position through this series.

A. Degree:that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc).

OR 

B. Combination of education and experience --courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education that totals 100%.

Geologist GS-1350 

You must meet the description in either A or B below to qualify for this position through this series.

A. Degree:geology, which included or was supplemented by 20 semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

OR 

B. Combination of education and experience --course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education that totals 100%.

(2) Minimum Qualifications

You must meet either A, B, or C in order to qualify for the series and grade to which you are applying.

GS-09

A. Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-09, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service.  Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: assisting with geological or geophysical assignments that require application of geological/geophysical principles for subsurface investigations.

OR

B. Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree OR Master’s or equivalent graduate degree.

OR

C. Combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet the total experience requirement for this grade level.

GS-11

A. Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-11, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service.  Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: completing geological or geophysical assignments that require application of geological/geophysical principles for subsurface investigations.

OR

B. Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

OR

C. Combination of Education and Experience: Combination of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet the total experience requirement for this grade level.

GS-12

Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-12, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service.  Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience 1) completing geological or geophysical assignments that require application of geological/geophysical principles for subsurface investigations; and 2) conducting geophysical data acquisition or seismic survey design projects.

Note: Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.
