Summary

Physical Demands/Work Environment: The work is primarily in an office setting, sedentary, requires long periods of sitting in one position, and intense concentration for several hours at a time. Stress may be experienced on a regular basis in attempting to respond to conflicting objectives and tight deadlines with limited resources. Occasional fieldwork may be required in support of resource mapping projects, involving extended days of travel in remote settings and in poor weather conditions.

Duties

Help

The incumbent provides support and advice for application of geospatial technology under the guidance and direction of a higher level specialist and/or supervisor. They are responsible for a wide range of spatial information required to support the management of public lands. The incumbent must have an effective mix of technical skills in the geographic and computer science disciplines, including ARCGIS, and GPS. Duties include input into a variety of databases. Providing technical user support for all aspects of geospatial data and software. Work with a diverse group of resource specialists, planners and managers to coordinate and implement GIS activities, to include; development of project objectives, evaluation of adequacy of existing data sources, creation/modification of GIS coverage, databases, analysis, and preparation of final output products.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. Grade (GS-4 for GS-5 and GS-5 for GS-7). 

You must meet the qualification requirements to be found qualified. 

GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level.  Examples of specialized experience includes providing technical user support for geospatial data in a natural resource context, and familiarity with a variety of databases and associated outputs.  Conducting research to locate and obtain information from existing databases.  Providing trouble shooting and user support assistance for GIS related problems. 

GS-05:  Three years of general experience that includes at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 level.  Examples of experience are similar to those above, but under greater supervision and with more review of work products.

OR Substitution of Education for Experience: 

For GS-7:  One full year of directly related graduate level education OR superior academic achievement*.

For GS-5:  4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. Qualifying education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

*Superior Academic Achievement: S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. 1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses 2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

OR Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also creditable.

These positions are temporary and are expected to last for up to 6 months. How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements. Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, you application will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.   In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position. The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored. The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position.

1)Knowledge of the GIS related technology and analytical techniques in order to learn to resolve moderately complex GIS Issues and completed projects and assignments.
 
2) Ability to communicate clearly about the application of GIS with planners, resource specialists, managers and peer professionals in Federal, State and local agencies.

3) Knowledge of principles of land use planning and interdisciplinary resource management.
 
4) Ability to provide technical user support and troubleshooting assistance for recurring problems.
