This is an internship for students who have recently been accepted for enrollment in or who are currently enrolled at least half-time in a certificate or degree seeking program in an accredited college or university, graduate, or professional school. Half-time is typically 6 semester hours for undergraduates, and 3 semester hours for Masters and above (but may be determined by the school).

**This position is temporary and there is NO promotion potential beyond the grade that you are selected for during the entire time period you are employed under this announcement.**

This position will be filled under the Pathways Internship Program. This Program allows students to gain paid work experience while pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate at a qualifying institution. Under the Pathways Program, students who successfully complete all work, study, qualifications, and other eligibility requirements may be offered a permanent position to work in our agency upon graduation or completion of a qualifying certificate.

At the Agency's discretion, students hired under the Pathways Program may be non-competitively converted to a term, career, or career-conditional appointment with a possible Full Performance Level (FPL) of GS-05, GS-07, GS-09, GS-11, GS-12, or GS-13 (FPL varies based on hiring department).

This position is in the excepted service.

This position is non-bargaining unit unless the appointment extends beyond 90 days.

This position may be eligible for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

Qualifications

Minimum Eligibility Requirement:

You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school (go to www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ to verify accreditation status). Individuals who are enrolled must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. You must provide evidence of your current (fall semester or equivalent) enrollment, either on your transcript or by uploading a separate class schedule. If you are completing your current program this semester you must provide a letter of acceptance or proof of enrollment into another qualifying program to be rated eligible.

Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: Geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Grade Level Requirements:

GS-07: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full academic year of graduate level education, at least 18 credits (27 quarter hours), or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. S.A.A. is based on

(1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership

  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    • 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    • 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
  3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.

OR

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You have had at least one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes: Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and geographic methods to perform assignments associated with the construction and editing of geographic or demographic databases, geographic data analysis, interpretation and illustration of geographic patterns, and the resolution of problems with GIS data sets.

OR

Combination of education and experience, as described above.

GS-09: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

EDUCATION: Successfully completed two academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, at least 36 credit hours (54 quarter hours).  

OR

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You have had at least one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes: Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to analyze, edit, and validate geographic or demographic data layers; resolve problems with GIS and geo-demographic data sets; visualize data cartographically; interpret geographic patterns; and technical writing and formal presentation of geographic and/or demographic topics.

OR

Combination of education and experience, as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
