Duties

Help
  • You will prepare or check indexes for designated publications that guide a reader (e.g., proper nouns found in the text or subjects of an abstract nature).
  • You will use desktop publishing hardware to draft, edit, and lay out material or to design, print, and distribute it.
  • You will analyze items submitted for public release (e.g., fact sheets, articles, photographs) to evaluate the nature or purpose.
  • You will verify factual information to prepare final reports for publication.
  • You will verify accepted English usage and grammatical structure as set forth in the Chicago Manual of Style or History Division Writing Guide.
  • You will edit written materials for publication (e.g., reports, articles, newsletters, magazines, news releases, training materials, brochures, interpretive handbooks, pamphlets, guidebooks, scholarly works, reference works, speeches, scripts).

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-07) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: gathering and verifying facts to edit materials for publication and presentation in scholarly journals or monographs for a variety of target audiences based on Chicago Manual of Style.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

In lieu of specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify based on meeting at least one of these listed educational accomplishments OR an equivalent combination of experience and education:
-Completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
-Completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree.
OR
-An LL.B. or J.D. that is related to the position being filled.
OR
-Combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

Qualified applicants will be required to take an editing test demonstrating their proficiency with Chicago Manual of Style to be considered.
