Summary

Physical Demands/Work Environment: May be required to work indoors or outdoors.  Outdoor conditions include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, heavy rains, and insects. Outdoor conditions may also include very steep, wet, muddy, uneven or rocky surfaces.  Physical demands include exertions such as, bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities. Duties

Help

Education Technicians at the Medford duty location assist in conducting on-site and off-site environmental education programs in partnership with other agency environmental education specialists (federal, state, and non-government organizations). Education and interpretive programs utilize The Table Rocks and McGregor Park natural and cultural resources to meet National Science Foundation education objectives, Oregon State K-12 Education Benchmarks and fulfill the environmental education, interpretation, and resource management objectives of the BLM. The employee assists in conducting research using historic documents from primary sources including the National Archives and Records Administration, General Land Office, and Sothern Oregon University, and other sources to develop and present historic and natural science education and interpretive programs.  Education Technicians assist higher-graded employees in presenting programs to engage visitors cognitively, affectively, and physically in the natural resources of the Table Rock and McGregor Park with the goal of facilitating stewardship of resources. Education programs match BLM mission/objectives with the state and national standards for science and history. Methods of engaging students and general public may include outdoor labs, role playing of ecological concepts, and techniques of visual, literary, and preforming arts. The employee’s assignments in this area range in duration from short periods of time up to a full day. Works as a member of a team in the development of yearly goals and objectives for the Table Rocks and McGregor Park interpretive and environmental education programs. Works as a member of a team to provide information about Table Rocks and McGregor Park environmental education, interpretation, and scientific research programs through the development of brochures, newsletters, news articles, correspondence, telephone calls, and personal contacts with the general public, other agencies, NGOs, and news media. Assists as directed in developing and presenting interpretive and educational programs about resource stewardship skills at trailheads and parks to as a means to prevent resource damage or help solve resource management problems. Assist more senior members of a team to design and revise educational and interpretive instructional materials, media, and props including historical replicas, brochures, website updates, and temporary exhibits.

NOTE:  Government housing is NOT available.

Must be able to stand for long periods of time on hard concrete floors in an interpretive or educational center.

Must be able to walk on uneven rocks, loose cobble, and slippery surfaces.

Regularly scheduled tour of duty includes working varying shifts which include weekend, holidays, and evening shifts.

Work frequently includes lifting and carrying of equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
 
This position requires you to wear an officially-approved uniform while in a duty status.

This position may require you to possess and maintain a valid State Drivers License.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.

GS-05: To be qualified for the GS-05 this specialized experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (one year at the GS-4) of the position to be filled. Examples: Experience working in a park or historical setting, meeting with the public or school groups to provide information, and conducting tours to explain the importance of the site’s historical and/or natural heritage. Work in a gift shop, interpretive center, or other facility collecting fees. Taking part in living history performances, or providing training to other staff and/or volunteers. Assisting with the development of and presenting interpretive and educational programs to school groups, the general public, or other organizations. OR Substitution of Education: Successful completion of 4 years of education in any field above the high school level may be substituted for specialized experience OR Equivalent combinations of education and experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

Overnight travel may be required on a regular and recurring basis and employee will be required to obtain and use a government charge card for travel.
