Duties

Help
  • Supervises a staff of scientific and administrative professionals and provides vision, direction and perspective for research, education, and extension programs of national and/or international scope and impact.
  • Maintains technical and disciplinary competence and keeps abreast of emerging topics, trends and issues in the assigned field in order to identify mission-relevant programmatic responses.
  • Initiates and facilitates networks, liaisons and collaborations among high-level partners and stakeholders both within and outside NIFA.
  • Serves as a staff expert and consultant in the disciplinary area(s) of responsibility.
  • Manages programs by prioritizing activities, anticipating problems, removing barriers or obstacles, and coordinating resources.

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements for the 101 series:
Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field

OR

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-15
Qualifying experience for GS-15 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes (1) conducting or applying social science disciplines to food or agriculture research, education or extension programs; (2) leading multidisciplinary teams comprised of scientific professionals that administer programs relevant to the areas listed below; (3) collaborating with scientific professionals to identify food and agriculture research, education, and extension priorities; (4) formulating policies to enhance research, education, and extension programs addressing issues related to areas listed below; and (5) fostering partnerships between university scientists, government agencies, and industry.

Application of social science disciplines to food and agriculture areas include (but are not limited to): Animal production and health, including aquaculture, livestock agriculture, and poultry science; Food Science and Human nutrition, including food safety, food technology, and nutritional education; Agricultural Engineering, including data science and biological engineering; Agricultural Economics and Social Sciences, including rural communities and development; Agricultural Education and Workforce Development, including role of Minority-serving institutions; and Human sciences.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
