Duties

Help
  • Perform a variety of technical duties in a field, laboratory, or greenhouse environment which entails participation in phases of the research processes by contributing ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of the research
  • Collect, prepare, evaluate and verify samples and supporting records, while maintaining records and locating and compiling data and other information from various sources
  • Maintain inventory of seed, chemicals, etc., prepare materials for use in the field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological)
  • Maintain, calibrate, and modify equipment and automated systems used for greenhouse and field crop production procedures.
  • Tabulate, and summarize data using personal computers and software packages.

Qualifications

GS-5: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. You must have experience with at least 2 of the specialized experience requirements below:

-Performing technical duties in field and laboratory settings for agricultural research;
-Taking measurements, handling data, establishing plots, making improvements in field and laboratory procedures, and researching and acquiring specialized equipment;
-Maintaining inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, equipment and/or supplies for field and laboratory research;
-Preparing samples for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to biology and/or botany. (NOTE: You must include transcripts.) OR Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education beyond two (2) years (60 semester hours) by 30. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Only undergraduate education in excess of the second year (60 semester hours) is creditable toward meeting the experience requirement when combining experience and education. (NOTE: You must include transcripts.)


GS-7: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. You must have experience with at least 3 of the specialized experience requirements below:

-Performing technical duties in field and laboratory settings for agricultural research;
-Taking measurements, handling data, establishing plots, making improvements in field and laboratory procedures, and researching and acquiring specialized equipment;
-Maintaining inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, equipment and/or supplies for field and laboratory research;
-Preparing samples for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a graduate level education with major study of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. OR Combination: of specialized experience and directly related graduate level education and experience as described above. To calculate, first determine your total number of graduate semester hours, and divide that number by 18. Next, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now add your percentages of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100% for you to qualify based on your combination of education and experience. (NOTE: You must include transcripts.)
