Duties

Help

As the Deputy Director of Governmental Affairs, you will:

  • Utilize previous legal and Congressional experience, work with the Director of External Affairs and other senior staff to develop strategies for the release of major notices, rulemakings, or other activities affecting the motor carrier safety program.
  • Manage the ongoing legislative implementation efforts of the Agency, including major, long-term legislation such as surface transportation reauthorizations.
  • Direct the development of issue papers, briefing materials, policy statements, questions and answers, testimony, and other materials for Congressional hearings on proposed legislation.
  • Work directly with Congressional staff on providing responses to questions submitted to Administration witnesses following Congressional hearings.  Responses must be thoroughly vetted through the Agency, the Department and the Office of Management and Budget as they will appear as a part of official public record.

The ideal candidate for this position has senior level experience working with Members of Congress and senior government officials, directing the oversight required to coordinate and integrate congressional and agency programs, as well as supervisory experience of a correspondence management program and team.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the Grade 14, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-13, it must include:

  • Experience related to transportation, motor carrier safety, government affairs, and the Federal legislative and regulatory process. Legal experience working with Members of Congress and providing senior government officials guidance on Congressional and state government matters.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
